How to merge PDF files without uploading them anywhere

4 min read

Contracts, bank statements, ID scans and invoices are exactly the files people merge. Most online PDF tools upload them to a server first. You do not have to accept that.

Why uploading is a risk

When you use a typical online merger, your files travel to someone else's computer, are processed there and are sent back. Good services say they delete files after a while, but you are trusting that promise, and you cannot check it. For a casual flyer that is fine. For anything with personal or financial details it is worth avoiding.

Merging in your browser

Modern browsers can read and write PDF files with code running on your own device, so a merger does not need a server at all. The Toolstia PDF merger works this way: the files are opened in your browser tab, their pages are copied into a new document, and the result is saved to your computer. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Steps

  1. Open the PDF merger and drop in your PDF files.
  2. Use Up and Down to put them in the order you want. The final file follows the list from top to bottom.
  3. Select Merge PDFs. The combined file downloads straight away.
  4. Open it and flip through to check the page order before you send it.

Starting from photos or scans

If your pages are images, such as phone photos of documents, use the image to PDF tool first. You can choose A4 or Letter pages and put the images in order. Then merge that PDF with any others.

Things that can go wrong

  • Password-protected PDFs cannot be merged. Remove the password in the program that created the file first.
  • Bookmarks and some form fields may not carry over to the merged file.
  • Very large files use a lot of memory, so a long list of big scans can be slow on a phone. Merge in smaller groups if the page struggles.
