Toolstia / Base64 encoder and decoder
Encode and decode Base64
Turn text into Base64 or decode a Base64 string back to readable text. Emoji and non-English characters work, and you can choose the URL-safe version. Nothing is sent to a server.
Base64 is an encoding, not encryption. Anyone can decode it, so never use it to hide passwords.
How it works
- Choose encode or decode.
- Paste your text or Base64 string.
- Copy the result, or use Swap to run it back the other way.
What Base64 is
Base64 writes binary data using 64 plain characters so it can travel safely in emails, URLs and JSON. It makes data about a third bigger.
URL-safe Base64
Standard Base64 uses + and /, which have special meaning in web addresses. The URL-safe form uses - and _ instead and leaves off the = padding. Decoding accepts both forms.
Unicode text
Text is converted to UTF-8 before encoding, so emoji and characters from any language round-trip correctly.
Not encryption
Base64 only changes the format. Anyone can decode it, so it does not protect secrets.
Questions
Is my text uploaded?
No. Encoding and decoding run in your browser.
Can I decode an image or file?
This tool decodes text. If the decoded data is not readable text, you will see a message saying so.
Why does decoding fail?
The input has characters that are not part of Base64, or it was cut off. Spaces and line breaks are ignored.
